This is a list of the top 50 mages in our favorite anime/manga "Fairy Tail". The following list is based on everything till the
Grand Magic Games arc. Since the following arcs (Tartarus) include demon mages, we decided not to include them in the list.. Please leave a comment!!
The mages are judged according to their attacking power, defending power, speed, intelligence, stamina, and durability.

The curvy chick girl from Raven Tail just made it into the 50th place, being ahead of all her members not because of her boobs, but she has shown great reflexes and skill with her hair magic, and proved herself being on the same level as Lucy. Raven Tail master Ivan still hasn't shown any great power other than the illusion magic (which doesn't even help during battles), while Obra is still a mystery.
49. Zoldeo
Guild: Previously Grimoire Heart
Rating: 7.2
Magic: Human Subordination, Celestial Spirit Magic
Zoldeo is probably the most underrated one of the 7 Kin of Purgatory. My guess is that people underestimate him when he isn't in Capricorn's form since he looks weak and hideous. But his Human Subordination magic is one of the most powerful magic ever. He has enslaved two of the greatest human warriors ever and he possessed Capricorn's body through this Lost Magic. Once people are unaware of Zoldeo's magic, they can easily be captured by him and may never be able to be free again.
48. Wendy
Guild: Fairy Tail (previously Cait Shelter)
"Sky Maiden"
Specialty: Being cute 'kawaii'

Magic: Sky Dragon Slayer Magic
The youngest of the list is the Sky Maiden, although she would have been the same age as Sting and Rogue if it wasn't for Acnologia. The mistress in the air has proved to be one of the best in supporting other mages, and without her healing powers, quite a few Fairy Tail mages might have died. During the battle with Chelia, she obviously lacked in power, but she still managed to get a draw with Chelia due to her tactics.

The chick of FT made it into the top 50! Of course, she was just a newbie from the start, but now she possesses most of the celestial spirits. Along with Loke/Leo, these 2 are proved to be hard to be dealt with. Her magic power also increased a lot since the beginning of the series. She can now force to close her gates and summon multiple spirits. And lastly, who wouldn't put this gorgeous princess in the top 50 list!?
46. Cana

Magic: Card Magic, Fortune Telling
Fairy Tail's alcohol addict is surprisingly a potential S class mage. Her card magic allows her to predict events and of course, attack her enemies with different elements. Her cards range from creating fire to summoning hot girls. Who wouldn't want to summon hot girls out!? Also, Mavis gave her Fairy Glitter, one of the 3 Fairy Tail great spells, so that she could win in the MPF game.
45. Angel
Guild: Reborn Oracion Seis (previously Oracion Seis)

Magic: Celestial Spirit Magic, Angel Magic
Another
chick is on the list, but this white-haired babe is from the dark side.
After losing to Lucy, she gave up on celestial magic and now uses angel
magic. This magic allows Angel to summon angels to defeat her
opponents. This is a very powerful magic, yet dangerous to Angel
herself, for her lifespan would be at risk.
44. Evergreen
Guild: Fairy Tail
Specialty: Being a fairy
Rating: 7.3
Magic: Stone Eyes, Fairy Magic
She is all you want! Well, at least according to her, this is true. The fairy queen of Fairy Tail isn't someone anyone wants to mess with, for a short stare can turn anyone in eye contact into stone. Besides her stone eyes, she possesses fairy magic, allowing her to really... be a real fairy. But the most important thing, of course, is her love for Elfman ;)
43. Bickslow
Guild: Fairy Tail
Specialty: Sticking out tongue
Rating: 7.3
Magic: Human Possession, Figure Eyes
Along with Evergreen, Bickslow is part of the Thunder God Tribe in Fairy Tail. Therefore, he isn't just any usual mage. Well, his defense is surely not the strongest, but he can possess any dolls, and make them his tools to attack his enemies crazily. Even more crazy, he possesses eye magic as well, just like Evergreen. His figure eyes can possess any human with a stare.
42. Racer
Guild: Reborn Oracion Seis (previously Oracion Seis)
Rating: 7.5
Magic: Slowing Magic, Vehicle Magic
Speed is his game, although he still is not the fastest mage yet. Racer has been proved strong and agile with his slowing magic. Even Doranbolt could not stop him with his teleportation magic, because Racer is just too fast. But at the end, Mirajane was proved to be equal in speed with her demon form, and Racer was brought to prison for causing all the trouble.
41. Chelia
Guild: Lamia Scale
Rating: 7.5
Magic: Sky God Slayer Magic
Another cute little girl like Wendy, and the cousin of Lamia's Scale Sherry. Wendy is the Sky Dragon Slayer, but did you expect Chelia to be the Sky God Slayer? Well, it happens to be so, and additionally, Chelia can heal herself as well. Even more amazing, her Sky God Slayer magic is taught by herself. No one taught her this dangerous magic.
40. Elfman
Guild: Fairy Tail
"Beast Arm"
Specialty: Being a MAN!
Rating: 7.5
Magic: Take Over
Probably the most buff one on the list. The Strauss sibling specializes in.. being a man. His obsession with the word man is .. unhealthy. But that doesn't stop him from being such a beast with his magic Take Over. He can transform into any beasts that he has had contact with. The most incredible thing that he probably did was defeating Bacchus. I mean, no one expected Elfman to defeat Quatro Cerberus' ace!
39. Hoteye
Guild: Previously Oracion Seis
Rating: 7.5
Magic: Earth Magic, Heaven Eye
Another one with an eye magic, Hoteye's magic is known as the Heaven's Eye. This allows him to see things from a log distance. But this isn't his main magic. Hoteye's element is Earth, and he can soften the ground through his magic. He had a tough battle with Jura, but this resulted to nothing, for they were both uninjured. This proves that Hoteye is somewhat powerful.
38. Juvia
Guild: Fairy Tail (Previously Phantom Lord)
"The Great Sea"

Magic: Water
I am sure we all ship Juvia with Gray, I mean, if you don't, Juvia will probably think of you as a love rival! Besides her love for Gray, the rain woman can make enemies feel cold and hot. Her water powers allow her use water to slice through rocks, and even use water to lock people in. The ex S class mage of Phantom Lord yet finds any success with becoming an S class mage in Fairy Tail, because Erza is just too strong.
37. Meredy
Guild: Crime Sorciere
Rating: 7.8
Magic: Maguilty Sense
Who would've thought that Meredy would turn into such a babe after 7 years!? Well, she sure has gone through puberty, but surprisingly, even before the time skip, she possessed of great magic power. She was equal to Juvia in their battle, and she eventually gave up after Juvia's inspiring words about living for the ones she loves. Well, I am happy that she has gone to the good side with Ultear!
36. Freed
Guild: Fairy Tail
"The Dark"
Specialty: Fanboying
Rating: 8
Magic: Dark Ecriture, Jutsu Shiki
The leader of the Thunder God Tribe, and just like Ever and Bickslow, Freed can use eye magic as well. His eyes allow him to combine with his rune magic. This means that he is free to write any forms of runes, ranging from runes that torture enemies by making them fear and suffer to runes that allow Freed to fly. Of course, it is even more useful defensively, for runes can create barriers to protect Freed. His fanboying over Laxus is even more incredible, because no one understands how he can be so obsessed with his leader.
35. Aria
Guild: Previously Phantom Lord
Rating: 8
Magic: Airspace
A big, tall air element S class mage who took out Makarov's powers in one shot. But if he is that powerful, why isn't he higher on the list? Well, Aria is powerful, but he also got defeated by Erza easily, and additionally, there is no news of him since Phatom Lord's defeat. So, I guess his potential has been completely wiped out after the 7 years. But who knows?
34. Ikaruga
Guild: Death's Head Caucus
Rating: 8
Magic: Sword Magic
Once again, a strong mage from the dark side whom we haven't heard from since Jellal's defeat. But she was shown to be equally powerful with Erza (until Erza got super serious and used new tactics), so she has top be the top 35. She is also one of the fastest female mages I've ever seen. Her speed combined with her swordsmanship is incredible, being able to slice things that were far away in a second.
33. Bacchus
Guild: Quatro Cerberus
Rating: 8
Magic: Palm Magic
The Drunk Falcon, the S class mage who gets even stronger after consumption of alcohol. Also, his speed when drunk is unimaginable as well. Before the Grand Magic Games, Erza thought of Bacchus to be equally powerful as her, but it doesn't turn out to be this. Through Elfman's clever defensive tactics, Bacchus is defeated. But if Bacchus wasn't that drunk, I guess he could have beaten Elfman in some ways other than using his palm.
32. Ichiya
Guild: Blue Pegasus
Rating: 8
Magic: Perfume Magic
Men! Yep, Ichiya is on the list. The silly guy who is obsessed with women is thought to be weak, but he isn't the leader of his tri-men for no reason. When his parfum magic is activated, he becomes strong and durable, and he was able to defeat Bacchus and another Quatro Cerberus mage Rocker with not much difficulty. Yes, he acts all stupid and stuff, but he is a wizard to be feared of.
31. Rustyrose
Guild: Grimoire Heart
Rating: 8
Magic: Arc of Embodiment
After watching his victory over Elfman and Evergreen, I thought that this guy was invincible. He could created almost.. everything! But he was somehow defeated by Freed and Bickslow afterwards. Being in Grimoire Heart, I expected him to be strong, but I didn't expect his magic to have that much potential. I mean, if he was more well-trained, he could bring the world to destruction!
30. Lyon
Guild: Lamia Scale
Rating: 8
Magic: Ice-Make, Ice Magic, Snow Magic
Gray's long time rival. Just like Gray, he uses ice magic, but unlike Gray, Lyon's main ice magic is to create animate materials (like animals). You also have to feel sorry for him, because no one wants him to be with Juvia, even though he loves her way more that Gray does. His fight against Kagura was impressive, for he managed to result in a draw with her. Well, since he is Ur's disciple, I guess it's natural for him to be strong.
29. Rufus
Guild: Sabertooth

Magic: Memory-Make
The minstrel who sings to the red moon, that's Rufus. His powerful memory make magic caused many troubles for Gray. After the first battle in the X791 Grand Magic Games, Gray swore to get revenge on him. Sabertooth is really strong, and their top 5 members are all in the top 30. Not to be looking down on Rufus, but he is already ranked the lowest among them, so this proves that Sabertooth, really is a strong guild. Also, Rufus will remember everything you do, so don't do things that stand out too much!
28. Gray
Guild: Fairy Tail
"The Ice Stripper"
Specialty: Stripping

Magic: Ice-Make, Ice Magic
This is is the ladies' favorite, since Hibiki didn't make it to the list. I mean, his stripping fetish gets all the girls yea? But seriously, Gray is a very skillful mage who can use ice magic even better than Ultear. Also, Gray totally crushed Rufus' memories during the Day 5 of the Grand Magic Games. He swore to get revenge on Rufus, and he did, with his Ice Make-Unlimited. Also, when fighting Natsu, Gray never loses, even though people may think Natsu has way more magic power.
27. Zancrow
Guild: Previously Grimoire Heart
Rating: 8
Magic: Flame God Slayer Magic
I got to say that I feel sorry for this weird guy, because he died too.. quickly. I mean, he does deserve great punishment for being a cocky prick and harming everyone, but maybe he was just unlucky in facing Zeref. If he lived on, I am sure he will lots of potential, since he is already a flame god slayer. I would love to see him fighting Natsu again, and I hope he really isn't dead! You know what this means, Hiro ;) Bring him back!
26. Jiemma
Guild: Sabertooth
Rating: 8
Magic: Blast Magic, Shockwaves
I'm not so sure about the guild master of Sabertooth, but he doesn't seem that strong as the rumors say about him. He might be smart and all in brining Sabertooth into number one, but is his magic power great? Natsu was easily dominating over him for a while, until Minerva came and stopped the fight. So, is this all Jiemma really has? Well, additionally, Sting defeated him without much difficulty, even though Jiemma's magic power was unique and all...
25. Orga
Guild: Sabertooth
Rating: 8
Magic: Lightning God Slayer Magic
Just like Laxus, a lightning based mage with immense magic power, but Orga may be too cocky and unintelligent. He is strong, and the MPF proved it. He was just unlucky to face Jura the wizard saint and Cana with Fairy Glitter, but his lightning god slayer magic definitely brought him into fame with the other 4 strong Sabertooth wizards.
24. Byro
Guild: Zentopia Church

Magic: Nullification Magic
I guess I can say that Byro has the best defense out of all the mages in this list who is not a wizard saint or guild master. His nullification magic brought Natsu to massive frustration, and even Gildarts to thinking of a plan B. His attack with this defensive magic also works well, and this resulted into the 2 having to fight hand to hand. Byro is a master in this, but of course, no one can match up with Gildarts.
23. Cobra
Guild: Reborn Oracion Seis (previously Oracion Seis)
Rating: 8.2
Magic: Poison Dragon Slayer Magic, Sound Magic
Some people think that this snake boy is too underrated, while others think he's overrated, so I guess being in the mid 20's should be a great reconciliation! He did great fighting Natsu back in the Zero/Brain days, and would not have lost if it wasn't for Natsu's dragon scream and Master Zero's surprising judgment. But the 2nd generation dragon slayer is great. He hears everyone's thoughts, and made Erza poisoned.
22. Azuma
Guild: Grimoire Heart
Rating: 8.2
Magic: Great Tree Ark
Another one from Grimoire Heart that died. But to be precise, Azuma turned into a tree, so you will never know what may happen to him. Well, I do hope Hiro brings him back, because he had such an amazing battle with Mira and Lisanna, and an even more incredible one with Erza. This tree man is better than you can imagine from a plant element dude. He can force explosive blasts and manipulate trees, and is almost on the same level as Erza.
21. Mirajane
Guild: Fairy Tail
"The Demon"
Specialty: Being a she-devil
Rating: 8.2
Magic: Take Over: Satan Soul, Cosmic Beam, Darkness Magic, Sleep Magic
Do not ever make this girl angry. She will give you the worst darkness you can ever imagine! Mirajane was weakened in the beginning of the series, but thanks to her awakening after seeing Freed torturing Elfman, her Satan Soul got back to her, and she defeated Freed. Also, she isn't an S class mage without any reason. Her speed is superb (outran Racer), strength is unbelievable (equal with Elfman), and her bikini photoshoots are just the killers!
20. Rogue
Guild: Sabertooth
Rating: 8.2
Magic: Shadow Dragon Slayer Magic, Dragon Force
The calm one of Sabertooth, and probably the smartest one out of the 7 dragon slayers. Rogue's shadow mode makes him incredibly fast, and together with Sting, their teamwork is unstoppable (except for Natsu and Gajeel). What I want to see from Hiro is to see Sting and him working together with Fairy Tail and dragon slayers to fight against their enemies. Also, I'm waiting for the X792 grand magic games, because Rogue is going to be Sabertooth's star player!
19. Sting
Guild: Sabertooth

Magic: White Dragon Slayer Magic, Dragon Force
The cocky but dependable man of Sabertooth. Well, no wonder he looked up to Natsu when he was young, they both are cocky dragon slayers! This light element dragon is tough, and if you read the manga, you'll see even more of Sting's ability. SPOILER ALERT. Sting becomes the next guild master of Sabertooth, and I hope to see what Sabertooth is able to do in the following years. Sting vs Makarov!?!? That will be a good fight.
18. Zero/Brain
Guild: Previously Oracion Seis
Rating: 8.2
Magic: Darkness Magic, Self-Destruction Spell, Organic Link Magic, Archive, Telepathy
The evil leader of Oracion Seis, and possesses extremely powerful dark magic once he changes his Brain form to his Zero form. If Natsu didn't consume Jellal's fire, then Zero probably had a chance of winning Natsu. But then again, Nakama power could beat all evil. Well, that's Fairy Tail's logic! It's interesting to see what Brain is like in the manga after 7 years, but he was easily killed by Cobra, who knew that Brain only treated the Oracion Seis as pawns.
17. Kagura
Guild: Mermaid Heel

Magic: Gravity Change
This
woman is as strong as she is cool. Even without sword magic, she is a
master in sword fighting, and can even be on the same level as Erza. She
almost defeated Lyon, but unluckily, the time was up for the fight, and
they tied as a result. If Mermaid Heel did not have her, then the whole
guild would not be a top tier guild, even with Milliana and Risley. It
gets even more intense when she fights Erza and Minerva in the manga.
16. Gajeel
Guild: Fairy Tail (previously Phantom Lord)
"Black Steel"

Magic: Iron Dragon Slayer Magic
Once a merciless and cruel mage from Phantom Lord, Gajeel is currently the iron dragon of the strongest guild Fairy Tail. Just like Natsu, he has high potential of being on of the best mages in the future. Gajeel has already proved himself to be an S class mage in Phantom Lord, so I'm sure it is easy for him to be one in Fairy Tail as well. But of course, Natsu won't give in so easily, but these 2 cocky dragon slayers think they're better than everyone else, so... Also, I wonder how Levy and him will do in the future ;)
15. Midnight
Guild: Reborn Oracion Seis (previously Oracion Seis)

Magic: Reflector, Darkness Magic, Personification Magic
Midnight has succeeded his father, Brain. But he still is not as strong as Natsu, but his magic is extremely dangerous. His darkness magic along with his reflecting magic made him seem impossible to defeat, but of course, our one and only Erza found a way to take Midnight down. After 7 years, Natsu did the same thing. But, let's wait to see what will happen to Midnight in the Tartarus arc, because Jellal and he will take Zeref down!
14. Natsu
Guild: Fairy Tail
"Salamander"
Specialty: Motion sickness ;)

Magic: Fire Dragon Slayer Magic, Lightning Flame Dragon Mode, Dragon Force
Finally, our main hero is seen in the list. Natsu at 14th? Many of you would put him higher because of his lightning fire form, but a lot of you will also say that he is overrated. I know what you're thinking! But I think the top 15 is a pretty good position for Natsu, because we all kow he can't defeat the strong youngsters like Laxus and Erza, but we know that he could defeat Midnight, Gajeel, and Brain/Zero. Additionally, he defeated both Sting and Rogue by himself. This is the power of a first generation dragon slayer! I am sure Natsu will become the top 3 mages once he achieves his full magic power. Also, I want to see more Lucy action with him!
13. Minerva

The evil one of Sabertooth. Well, she might not seem too evil in the Grand Magic Games, but you'll see later! Also, her powers are so amazing that even Sting and Rogue has to call her 'the lady'. Her magic power is also far more impressive than her father, and she could have easily become the guild master in the very beginning. I wonder what path she'll take in the future, I'm very eager to know!
12. Ultear
Guild: Crime Sorciere (previously Grimoire Heart)

The mistress of time, and probably produced one of the most emotional moments in both the anime and the manga. I'll say that Ultear turning into good was a great scene (battle with Gray), and I believed that a lot of you guys have cried watching it. Besides this, her magic power is incredible, she is capable of many different kinds of magic, with time controlling and ice make being her 2 main forms. If she hadn't been nostalgic and if she used her Arc of Time, I am sure she wouldn't be defeated by Gray. Also, it is extremely sad to see Ultear turn into a weak and old lady at the end of the Grand Magic Games arc. Hiro, please somehow turn her back into the Ultear that we love!
11. Erza
Guild: Fairy Tail

What can I say, the best female mage in the whole series. Using her requip magic, she is able to transform herself into wearing over 15 powerful armor gears, and she could wear many different clothes through this magic. So, how powerful is she? Some of you may even put her in the top 10. Well, this girl has defeated a lot of powerful mages easily, like Cobra and Aria. She has also defeated many strong mages like Midnight, Ikaruga, Azuma with more effort. But in the end, no matter how much effort she uses, she always manages to win, because she is... our Titania, Erza. I just wonder how far she will go with Jellal! ;)
10. Mystogan
Guild: Previously Fairy Tail

Well, let me start off with one thing, if he stayed in Earthland, he could possibly even be placed higher on the list, his magic will be even better than Laxus'. But in my opinion, I'm guessing that Mystogan's magic power got worse after the 7 years, and I wonder how he's doing in Edolas after these 7 years? When he was still in Fairy Tail, his magic ability was shown greatly. He was on the same level with Laxus, and he took down many members of the Phantom Lord by himself only.
9. Bluenote
Guild: Grimoire Heart

This one is another one of the top mages who I wonder what's going on with his life. Bluenote was Master Hades' strongest mage in Grimoire Heart, and easily defeated Natsu, Lucy, and Cana with his gravity magic. Luckily, Gildarts came just in time, and took Bluenote down. But seeing a wizard taking Natsu down so easily is quite rare! After Grimoire Heart got destroyed, Bluenote was left in the island.
8. Jose
Guild: Previously Phantom Lord and 10 Wizard Saints

Magic: Darkness magic, thought projection
The ex member of the 10 Wizard Saint, and the evil one of them. He was wrong to pick a fight with Fairy Tail, because even his top mages was defeated by non S class members like Natsu, Gray, and Elfman. But when he stepped in the game, he was obviously way stronger than them. Even when he was only around, Erza was afraid for sensing such a dark force. At the end, he was no match for Makarov, and Phantom Lord was then disbanded.
7. Jura
Guild: Lamia Scale (also 10 Wizard Saints)

Magic: Earth magic
Was once the worst of the 10 Wizard Saints, but after the 7 years, he has climbed up to the 5th spot. Even before he became 5th, his skill was superb, for he easily took down Brain. He also shown immense stamina and durability, which was expected from the wizard saint. In the Grand Magic Games, his immense magic power was shown through the MPF, for he produced a whopping 8544 points, which was 5000 points more than Orga's, 7000 points more than Millianna's, and I don't even have to mention the useless mages' points.
6. Laxus
Guild: Fairy Tail
Specialty: Being a boss

The
badass of Fairy Tail. Laxus started off as someone who all viewers
hated, and I really didn't like him for turning his back against his
Fairy Tail friends. But after he got kicked out by his grandfather
Makarov, he came back to save Natsu's team and helped them fight against
Hades. He realized his only home is Fary Tail! Yay!!! Besides this, he
has shown great skill with his lightning magic. He probably is the
fastest mage currently, and he has demonstrated his top ability against
Raven Tail. Also, who would have thought that he could defeat Jura, one
of the Wizard Saints!?!?!?

The mage who will succeed Makarov as the next guild master of Fairy Tail. This man is one who is respected greatly, and to Hades, is the only one who is of true great level in Fairy Tail along with Makarov. If Gildarts stayed in Fiore more frequently and started giving a crap about stuff, I think he will be promoted as a wizard saint, since he is already of the same level as Jura and Jellal. Some may even argue that he has already surpassed Makarov. His crash magic is amazing as well, as he could destroy all his enemies quickly.

The best guild master forever! Makarov has done a great job leading Fairy Tail to become the number 1 guild in Fiore. He has trained this current generation's teens like Erza, Natsu, Gray, Mira, and even his grandson Laxus to dominate the Grand Magic Games. Besides being such a great father to his guild, he is a wizard saint, and I'm pretty sure he was in the mid ranking before the time skip. Don't underestimate this small and old guy, because he can turn into a titan and crush anyone, and he is said to be a trained mage in many different elemental magics.
3. Jellal
Guild: Crime Sorciere (previously Magic Council, 10 Wizard Saints, and Tower of Heaven)

I don't even know where to start off for this one... but I am glad that he has turned his back on his evil ways, and started the independent guild Crime Sorciere and helped Fairy Tail. Well, even if it's maybe only for Erza, he still proved to be a great help ;) But I am sure he is completely willing to defeat all evil now, and even Mavis could sense his heart to be similar to those who are from Fairy Tail. Additionally, the former Wizard Saint is the top mage of his generation, even more powerful than Erza, Laxus etc. Oh, and why is he above Makarov and Gildarts? Well, this is because Jellal's Heavenly Body Magic alone is already amazing. Additionally, he is a master of darkness magic as well as fire magic.
2. Hades
Guild: Previously Grimoire Heart and Fairy Tail

Well, this case is a sad one. First of all, Hades has made Fairy Tail such a great guild, and his decision of passing his master role to Makarov was a good one. But for some reason, he turned in to darkness, and wanted to destroy Fairy Tail. He has shown his great magic ability by defeating Makarov easily, but of course, the bad guys never win, and Team Natsu defeated him along with Laxus. Even sadder, he was killed by Zeref at the end of the Tenrou Arc.
